Rookie of the Year Race Takes Shape at Season Mid-way Point

It’s startling how quickly things change in NFL betting. And it’s sobering how much perspective two months can bring to a rookie of the year competition.

When the NFL betting season began the odds on favorites to win the ROY award were the two highest selected QBs in the 2009 draft: Matthew Stafford and Mark Sanchez. It was basically decided (not open for discussion) that these two would be the finalists for the award and there was no one else in the picture.

But that was a Stafford knee injury and a 5 INT Sanchez performance ago and things in the NFL football betting landscape have shifted drastically since then. Stafford has missed the last three weeks with the injury and Sanchez might as well has well have after throwing 8 INTs and losing two of three during that stretch.

The QBs drop-off has opened the door for other rookie offensive performers like Knowshon Marino and Percy Harvin.

Marino is an impressive case considering that he missed all of camp yet still got the starting job on a 6-0 team and is on pace to run for over 1,000 yards. As he becomes more familiar with the offense he should put up even better numbers.

And what can you say about Harvin? The speedster Florida can basically do everything. His versatility makes him a virtual lock for the NFL football news’ Offensive Rookie of the Year, so long as he can stay healthy. He’s a kick returner, punt returner, receiver and running back and he makes Brett Favre look great and defenses look awful.
