Teams of NFL Draft focused on the present or the future

NFL draft day provides an abundance of NFL insights that can help you envision how well different teams will perform in an upcoming NFL season.  NFL draft predictions offer an infinite number of opinions before the NFL draft, but it is only once the NFL draft actually takes place that one can really see the goals of each team.  One of the most important insights that can be made from the NFL draft is whether or not a team is focused on winning immediately or focused on a rebuilding effort that may require several years to produce dividends.

The NFL draft is always preceded by weeks and weeks of seemingly endless NFL draft predictions.  These NFL draft predictions, based on assessments of each team’s immediate needs, can provide useful insights on each team’s needs and direction.  However, these NFL draft predictions are quickly forgotten once the actual NFL draft takes place and the reality becomes apparent.  When watching the NFL draft, most fans focus predominately on the actual players who are picked up in the NFL draft and then the prospects of each team are evaluated based upon the abilities of the drafted players.  However, such an evaluation ignores some of the most important information that can be acquired from the NFL draft.

The NFL draft gives a fairly clear picture about each team’s general direction.  A team that picks up players that are assumed will start in the following year are looking for a quick fix to provide an immediate boost.  Furthermore, teams that give up future NFL draft picks to trade up in an NFL draft can be recognized as particularly aggressive toward an upcoming season, and these are often the teams to keep an eye on.  This aggressive approach to the NFL draft is most often exhibited by teams that are under pressure, such as teams with a coach who knows that if he does not win in the following season then he will probably be let go.

Such NFL draft moves can be risky, because it is hard to anticipate the immediate impact of a rookie, yet these teams can often prove surprisingly dangerous once the NFL season begins.  On the other hand, the NFL draft also clarifies which teams are primarily focused on building for the long term.  Such teams often draft quarterbacks and are willing to trade away veterans for more picks in the NFL draft.  These teams are in obvious rebuilding efforts and the results will likely not be seen for several seasons.  Consequently, one should not expect much success from such teams in the near future, but should consider this type of squad as a potential long term threat.
